Kendama History

Kendama's roots trace back to the 17th century in Japan, inspired by the French bilboquet game that washed ashore via trade ships. Originally called "ken tamago" (sword and egg), it was a dexterity tool for samurai training, think precision under pressure.

By the 1930s, it hit mass popularity with standardized shapes and post-WWII, it became a cultural staple. Fast-forward to the 2000s: Western influencers like Paul Rosenberg (founder of KendamaUSA) brought it stateside, sparking a boom. Today, it's huge in Europe and Asia, with pros like Bonz Atron dropping jaw-dropping routines on YouTube.

A Kendama is a traditional Japanese skill toy consisting of a wooden handle (ken) with three cups and a ball (tama) connected by a string.

For beginners, we recommend starting with a Kendama that has a larger tama and sticky paint finish, which makes learning basic tricks easier.

Start with Big Cup, Small Cup, and Base Cup. Once you master these, move on to Moshikame and Around the World.

Loose tama?

  • Pull string through hole
  • Tie a double knot under the tama
  • Trim excess (leave 2 cm)

Chipped paint?

  • Lightly sand with 400-grit
  • Apply thin layer of clear coat or touch-up paint
  • Dry 24h — good as new

Worn cups?

  • Refresh with honeystick (included free with every kendama)
